How to Remove Musty Smell From Winter Clothes and Wardrobe

by Siddharth Kumar on Oct 21, 2026
How to Remove Musty Smell From Winter Clothes and Wardrobe

You open the almirah in November and pull out your favourite hoodie. It looks fine. Then the smell hits you. Stale, damp and a little sour, like it has been sitting in a closed box for months. Which it has.

This is very common in winter, and it happens in almost every Indian home. The good news is that it is easy to fix. You do not need any fancy product. In this guide, we will show you how to remove musty smell from winter clothes and keep your wardrobe fresh all season.

Why Winter Clothes Start Smelling Musty

Winter looks dry, but your clothes still hold moisture. A few things cause the problem.

First, clothes dry slowly. On a cloudy or foggy day, a shirt can stay damp for hours. If you fold it even a little wet, the dampness stays inside the fabric.

Second, there is very little sunlight. In a PG room or a flat with a small balcony, clothes may never see real sun. Sunlight helps dry clothes fast and also keeps them fresh.

Third, a steel almirah in a closed room traps air. The door stays shut, nothing moves, and any small moisture just sits there. Sweaters and jackets that stay packed for months make it worse.

That is why you get that stale smell in clothes the moment you open the door.

How to Remove Musty Smell From Clothes

Do not panic and throw everything in the wash. Try these steps one by one.

  1. Rewash with an extra rinse. Use your normal detergent and run one more rinse cycle. This washes out the old smell trapped in the fabric.

  2. Add a little white vinegar. Pour about half a cup into the final rinse. Check the care label first, especially for delicate fabrics. The vinegar smell goes away once the clothes dry.

  3. Dry them fully. This step matters the most. Hang clothes in open air and in a sunny spot if you can. If there is no sun, dry them under a fan with space between each piece. If you are wondering how to dry clothes in winter without bad smell, this is the answer. Air and space, not just time.

  4. Air the clothes that are clean but smell stale. Not every piece needs a wash. A jacket that only smells stored can just hang outside for a few hours.

  5. Use steam or a warm iron. For wool and heavy fabrics, light steam can lift the smell. Do this only if the label allows it.

Also, if your clothes smell after washing in winter, it usually means they did not dry properly. Check the drying, not the detergent.

How to Freshen Your Wardrobe

Sometimes the clothes are fine and the almirah is the real problem. A quick reset helps.

Take everything out. Yes, everything. Wipe the shelves with a dry cloth. If the smell is strong, use a cloth slightly damp with water and a little vinegar, then wipe again with a dry one.

Now let the almirah stay empty for a few hours with the door wide open so fresh air can move through.

Line the shelves with clean cotton cloth or old newspaper. Both soak up extra moisture.

Then keep a small open container inside. Baking soda, a few dried neem leaves or a piece of charcoal all work well. Change them every month or so.

Fix the musty smell in wardrobe once, and it stays away for weeks if you follow a few simple habits.

How to Store Winter Clothes the Right Way

Storage is where most people go wrong. Here is how to store winter clothes so they come out fresh next year.

  • Wash and dry them fully before you pack them away.

  • Avoid plastic covers. They trap moisture and make the smell worse.

  • Use breathable cotton bags or old bedsheets instead.

  • Do not overpack. Clothes need a little space to breathe.

  • Leave small gaps between pieces so air can move.

  • Open the almirah once every week or two and let it air out.

A small tip. Keep sweaters folded, not hung, so they hold their shape. But refold them once in a while so no corner stays pressed for too long.

Small Daily Habits That Stop the Smell From Coming Back

You do not need a big cleaning plan. A few small habits are enough.

  • Never put damp or sweaty clothes back in the almirah. Let them air first.

  • Open the almirah door for some time every day.

  • Make sure clothes are completely dry before folding.

  • Keep the room ventilated when you can, even for ten minutes.

It sounds basic, but these habits do most of the work.

Musty clothes feel annoying, but the fix is simple. Dry well, store smart and let your almirah breathe. Do this, and your winter clothes will smell fresh every time you pull them out. Breathable cotton clothes are also easier to keep fresh, and that is something we focus on at Norelle with our premium cotton tees. Try these tips this week and see the difference.
